Apple is inviting Apple Watch users around the world to take part in Global Close Your Rings Day on April 24, 2025 — a celebration of everyday movement and the power of staying active.

By completing their Move, Exercise, and Stand goals, users can earn a limited-edition award and exclusive animated stickers for Messages. This initiative underscores the Apple Watch’s role as a comprehensive fitness and health companion.

A decade of activity rings.

As Jeff Williams, Apple’s COO, noted: “A decade ago, we introduced Activity rings — and since then, Apple Watch has grown to offer an extensive set of features designed to empower every user.”

The Apple Watch, which has become the world’s most popular smartwatch over the past decade, continues to be a key companion in fitness and health. From tracking workouts to providing insights into sleep, heart health, and even menstrual cycles, the device is helping millions form healthier habits.

Since their introduction ten years ago, activity rings have provided users with a simple and engaging way to stay active. The Move, Exercise, and Stand rings encourage daily movement, structured workouts, and regular standing intervals, respectively. Users can customize these goals to fit their lifestyles and even pause them when needed.

To mark the occasion, Apple Stores globally will offer a special commemorative pin, available from April 24 while supplies last. Users are also encouraged to share their activities on social media using the hashtag #CloseYourRings.

Scientific validation.

Backed by science, the benefits of staying active are clear. Insights from the Apple Heart and Movement Study — conducted with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the American Heart Association — show that those who frequently close their rings are:

  • 48% less likely to experience poor sleep quality
  • 73% less likely to have elevated resting heart rates
  • 57% less likely to report high-stress levels

With more than 200,000 participants, the study strengthens Apple’s mission to empower users with meaningful health insights while ensuring privacy and data protection remain top priorities.

Advanced Sensor Technology and Data Accuracy

The Apple Watch utilizes advanced sensor technology to provide accurate health and fitness data. Apple’s November 2024 validation summary shows that the device’s optical heart sensor measures heart rate during workouts, while accelerometers and gyroscopes track movement. Combined with machine learning algorithms, these sensors estimate calorie expenditure and other fitness metrics.

Privacy and Data Security

Apple prioritizes user privacy, ensuring that health and fitness data are encrypted and stored securely. With features like two-factor authentication and on-device processing, users have control over their personal information.

Whether it’s through customizable goals, advanced workout metrics, or encouraging nudges to move, the Apple Watch continues to inspire users to lead more active, mindful lives — one ring at a time.
