India has launched its first Virtual Reality (VR) Nursing Training Lab, a collaborative effort between MediSim VR and Kusum Dhirajlal (KD) Hospital.

This state-of-the-art facility, located in a 300-bed multispecialized hospital in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, aims to revolutionize nursing education by integrating advanced VR technology.

The VR Health Lab is designed to provide immersive training environments, allowing nursing students and healthcare professionals to practice medical procedures and enhance their clinical skills in a realistic setting.

The lab features a comprehensive module library of essential skills, endorsed by the Medical Council of India, the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom, and the American Medical Council.

Riddhi Baid, the business development head at MediSim VR, highlighted the lab’s focus on essential healthcare skills, including assessing vital signs, proper wound care techniques, and the insertion of catheters and IV cannulas. The facility, which opened in June, serves as a Center of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to bridging skill gaps, improving efficiency, and aligning training with industry demands.

Dr. Anuja Desai, executive director of KD Hospital, emphasized the lab’s role in upskilling nursing students and healthcare professionals across Gujarat. “By integrating this cutting-edge simulation training technology into our curriculum, we not only enhance our students’ learning experience but also serve as a training hub for healthcare professionals,” she stated.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the shortage of trained nurses in India. According to the Indian Nursing Council, the country has approximately 3.3 million registered nurses, translating to 1.96 nurses per thousand people, which is below the World Health Organization’s recommended ratio of three nurses per thousand population. The VR training lab aims to improve the quality of nursing education and standardize training across institutions, particularly in rural areas where resources are limited.

The collaboration between MediSim VR and KD Hospital began in January, marking a significant milestone in the integration of VR technology into healthcare education in India.
