Amazon announced on Tuesday its return to healthcare with Amazon Clinic, a new healthcare marketplace. A blog post and a main stage session at HLTH22 in Las Vegas announced the news.
Earlier this year, Amazon announced that it was closing its employer healthcare program, Amazon Care, which was originally created for Amazon employees.
As with Amazon Care, Amazon Clinic won’t involve Amazon itself providing care. In place of partnering with a single company, Amazon will create a virtual marketplace that connects visitors to existing providers of telehealth services.
The marketplace will initially be available in 32 states. The annoucement states that Amazon has already vetted the providers and that costs will vary depending on the provider. Although users might be able to utilize insurance to cover the costs, the service will not initially accept this option.
